Galvanic Corrosion

August 27, 2011

Moisture presents many problems in buildings and for metals there is the issue of corrosion. When two different metals are in contact and moisture is present one metal will corrode the other. This is called galvanic corrosion. This issue is common around window and curtain wall systems and in metal roofing systems.  To prevent this corrosion one of two solutions can be implemented:

  1. A mastic coating can be installed to separate the metals.
  2. Another sacrificial strip of metal can be installed.
Metals have been arranges in a list called the nobility of metals. Metals higher on this list will corrode metals that are lower on the list.
